A very short history
The JEREMIAH O'BRIEN was built at the New England shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. Launched in June 1943 and commissioned a few months later. She has the distinction of being the only operable surviving vessel of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France in June 1944. After the war she was laid up in the reserve fleet at Suisun Bay along the Sacramento river near Martinez California. In 1979 she began her journey from the reserve fleet to San Francisco. She holds the honor of being the only vessel to steam under her own power from the reserve fleet. For more information click on the above link. And while you are there please donate to her upkeep.
